Dear Committee Chair Senator Rivera and Senate Members of the Standing Committee on Health :
I am writing to share with you my opposition to any possible future proposed COVID-19 vaccination mandates for school-aged children.  Should the vaccine be mandated, it will become necessary to withdraw my children from school.
Forcing the COVID-19 vaccine upon children is neither reasonable nor scientific.  From the beginning of the pandemic, we have been aware that this virus does not pose the same risk to the young as it does to the elderly.  K-12 students face a near zero statistical risk of death or long-term complications from SARS-CoV-2.  The SARS-CoV-2 virus is less dangerous to K-12 students than is seasonal influenza.  Young people in this age category face a greater statistical risk of complications from the vaccine than from the virus.  Also, many young people have already been infected with SARS-CoV-2.  This means they have already acquired immunity, and forcing a vaccine upon them is medically unnecessary and even contraindicated.  Studies are emerging that consistently reveal that those previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 have a robust immune response involving T-cell memory.  In other words, a previous infection = protection.  Numerous studies are available to support this position (see the Cleveland Clinic research results released in June, 2021 and the document posted by the NIH in January, 2021 titled “Lasting immunity found after recovery from COVID-19”).  Given the nature of the science, why are we so strongly “encouraging” young people – many of whom have already been infected and who are at low risk from this virus even if not previously infected – be vaccinated?  Finally, even the World Health Organization recognizes that it is premature to universally mandate COVID-19 vaccinations to school aged children.
Please support the science and the rights of individual families to decide the medical interventions that best fit the circumstances of their families.  We are adults capable of making well-thought out and independent decisions for ourselves, our children, and our elderly. Ultimately, a mandate is a threat of force and is un-American and ugly indeed.
As members of the legislature, I expect you to provide the necessary checks and balances on the power of the executive. One (among many) of the issues for which legislative restraint upon executive authority is necessary is the threat of a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination for school-aged children. In both your capacity as a check upon executive power and your legislative capacity to vote “nay” to any bills requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for school-aged children, I ask you to oppose governmental overreach and the scientifically unsound possibility of such a mandate.
Thank you.
